Hey Y’all! Did you know that May is National Salad Month?

So what better time to share this tasty salad with you?!

It’s really simple to make and only requires the following:

I bag of Broccoli Slaw

2 Cups Grapes – Sliced in Half

2 Medium Apples – Cored and Diced

2/3 (or less) Raspberry Vinaigrette

Optional: 1 Cup Nuts (I like using walnuts!)

Start by slicing and dicing

Then, throw all ingredients into a large bowl and stir them up.

Lastly, and most importantly… ENJOY!

What salad will you celebrate the occasion with? I’d love to have your recipe!

Spreading The Stillwater

April 16, 2012

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a beautiful weekend. Jeremy and I spent many hours pulling weeds from the yard. It was the start of some very exciting outdoor plans we have in mind for this spring/summer! Prior to pulling weeds though, I spent my Friday off doing some painting. Back when we moved in we painted our tv room and kitchen room with Stillwater (by Valspar). Since we were unsure what we would be using the front room for, we left the walls white and it has looked similar to this since last June:

BORING!

And if you were able to read my post describing the direction I’m heading for this room you’ll know that I would like for it to look way more like this:

For some reason having a couch and/or a few chairs in the front room sounds like useless non-sense to me. But, when you put four chairs around a table, it feels completely genius.I guess that’s because it sort of mixes a dining room with a sitting room and seems to be the perfect place for a couples game night. With that being said, I’ve been on a mission to find ways of sneaking this room re-design in with all of the other desirable projects on our to-do list.

This weekend, I got out our partly used can of Stillwater that we had sitting in the basement and decided to give the hall a fresh coat of paint. Since we loved the look, I decided to just continue on and paint the whole front room Stillwater too! I needed to pick up an extra can of paint, but it was totally worth it. Even though the room is still in a very raw state, the fresh coat of paint helps to keep the lower level feeling much more fluid.

I know this picture mostly shows of our newly diyed light fixtures, but notice how obvious that hall wall to the left sticks out before getting painted. Now, your eye just flows right down the hall to the front room.

I shifted the large console table to that corner since it somewhat blocks the other window being on the staircase wall. But, I think I will return it to the staircase wall after I get my chairs so that it frees up more of a square space for the seating. In the mean time, the mirror and other wall decor sit waiting for my decision.

I put board and batten on my mood board but I am currently debating if this would be the best place for it. I am considering possibly doing a stenciled treatment in the entry nook instead?

Oh and did you notice my new lamp?!!

I found this guy at Salvation army this weekend…

The shape reminded me of the Pottery Barn lamp that I had included in my living room mood board.

And the price…

how could I go wrong?! So, I scooped it up along with a shade for only $1.69 and metallic spray paint. I gave the whole thing a good rub down with steal wool followed by a few thin coats of paint.

I’m quite pleased with how it turned out considering I spent less than $15.

So, progress was made and it feels great! I also posted our red couch on Craigslist in hopes of getting a few dollars that I could put towards our new seating! I eagerly await the day that happens. :)

How about you, did you make an project progress this weekend? I would love to hear about it!

A few weeks back we swapped out some of our kitchen lighting with some new diy lighting. If you look closely at the light that was original to the kitchen when we moved in, you will notice a metal bracket had been screwed into the ceiling to support all three pendants.

That meant we were left with holes in the ceiling when we put in our re-finished chandy,.

I debated getting a medallion, but they are quite pricey and I would like to paint the whole ceiling in the future (since we have some scuff marks where we removed cabinets back in the fall) so I didn’t think the medallion was our best option. Instead, I filled the holes with Spackle and broke out my celery….

Yes CELERY and paint!

I strategically trimmed three different pieces to have similar shapes while being slightly different in size. Then, the stamping began. I dipped the end of the celery into paint and dabbled it on paper to get off the excess. Next, I slowly worked my way around our new chandelier’s ceiling mount and re-dipped my celery every few stamps. I worked around and around increasing the size of celery stamp as I got further away from the light.

The tricky thing is, the design does not actually cover the patched holes. If you look close on the left side you can see one. Mostly, our sunburst just does a good job of leading your eyes away from the imperfections! A free fix, gotta love it!

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful day full of love and laughter.

Happy Spring! The trees and flowers are blooming quickly around here and I am loving it! I couldn’t resist adding more color in our home as well.

First, I made a quick switch-a-roo to our Borje Ikea chairs in the kitchen.

It was really easy! I just flipped the chairs over, unscrewed the cushion from the frame, stapled the blue fabric to the bottom of the seat pad, and screwed it back in place. It adds such a fun pop of color and can be easily switched back to the neutral white whenever we are ready for it.

I also added bright pops of color over in the TV room by sewing some very simple pillow covers for some Ikea pillows. I used a satin to mimic the silk covers found over at West Elm.

This was also pretty easy. I cut two squares of fabric for each pillow, sewed three of the sides together, turned it so the seems were on the inside, put the pillow in, and hand-stitched the fourth side shut.

Since I only had to buy 1 yard of fabric for both pillows and I had a coupon, both of the pillows only set us back $14 (including the cost of the pillows inside!) Gotta love DIY savings!

Do you notice my other exciting burst of color?!!

I bought two teal blue, glass lamps from Target just the other day along with new shades. Now, I normally don’t buy lamps at full price. I typically enjoy thrifting lamps and fixing them up for a much more budget friendly outcome. But these lamps had me at hello! I saw them when I was browsing through a Target flyer about a week back. They lingered in my mind until I had to make a trip to Target to see them in person. I LOVED them but just couldn’t pull the trigger (you know, the paying-full-price-for-lamps trigger). So, I walked out without them. I couldn’t get them out of my mind though, so after thinking about them for two days, I finally went and made the purchase. I am so glad I did too. I love how they look, especially when they are shining bright! :)

Oh and check out my pig! Now anything is possible, the pig can fly!

Lastly, I got out these jars that I painted with acrylic last spring. I fill them with artificial plants so I don’t have to worry about the paint coming off. It was a really affordable way to add some extra color to our shelves!

Open windows, flowers blooming, loads of sunshine, and pops of bright color… I can’t think of a better way to welcome Spring!
